Since August of 2010, all Live IDs have an Inbox.  For non Live email addresses, the Inbox will only receive emails to the non-Live address if you go to Options, More options, Sending/receiving emails from other accounts and setup pop access to the non-Live address.  You can also create an alias and send/receive with the alias.

I'm not sure I understand your problem. What can't you do now after the change to Office 365 that you could do before?

When you rename your Windows Live ID, your new ID works just like your old one. All of your account information and contacts will automatically transfer to your new ID within 48 hours.
