It was a Tuesday morning.  I had just done the school run with the four year old and was deciding what me and the toddler should get up to in our six hours of ‘freedom’ before we had to go back and pick her up.  There was the options of tidying the apartment, preparing dinner, some playtime and perhaps a trip to the supermarket.  However, having just arrived in Ho Chi Minh City and knowing that it wouldn’t be long before we would be into the everyday routines of playdates, work, housework etc. I thought let’s make the most of our short time living in District 1 and let’s go out and explore!

So I bundled the almost two year old into a baby carrier that I was sure would be too small for him, but he loved it, and we headed out into the hustle and bustle of the city.  I will be honest and confess that I did have an ulterior motive.  I had read about an old apartment block which had been converted into many different cafes, restaurants and shops.  I had wanted to go at the weekend, but it was little too ‘out there’ for my husband and with his fear of heights and the pre schoolers love for climbing it was probably best kept for just me and the slightly less adventurous toddler.

As we headed up each floor more and more wonderfully quaint and unique cafés and shops were revealed.  Just as interesting as the different establishments were the other people that we met, also curious to see what hidden gem were hidden within this old, run down building. Having visited each of the nine floors and now really needing a break I decided to stop on the fourth floor and made my first visit to an enchanting café called Partea.  It labelled itself as ‘The English Tearoom’ and it certainly didn’t disappoint! I will be honest and say it’s one of the most English tearoom experiences I have ever had which coming from Great Britain is quite an achievement.

Everyone in my family is trying to eat better and take care of themselves. I’m proud to say that there are no longer soft drinks in our house, and we all primarily drink water.

At some point, we fell into this habit of only drinking out of plastic water bottles. I know a lot of families drink water with those, but this is the only way we drink water. My parents buy four or five cases of Arrowhead water each week and use them to keep our mini-fridge stocked.

My dad explained the purchase as a matter of convenience and safety. Convenience because you can just grab them and go,  and safety because of potential tap-water contamination.
